Quick Answer: Woolite carpet cleaner is made by Bissell, not by the Woolite laundry brand: Bissell bought the Woolite rug and upholstery business from Playtex in 2004 for $62 million and makes it under license. The one to buy is Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover ($5.99 for 22 fl oz at Target), a hydrogen peroxide spray. A Woolite INSTAclean spray placed 3rd of 13 in a 2019 lab trial by the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI), while Woolite Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam placed 12th of 13. For machines, Woolite Pet + Oxy 2X costs $16.99 for 60 oz. Don’t read “Woolite” as “wool-safe”: one Woolite pet spray’s label says it is not for wool fibers.
“Woolite carpet cleaner” gets searched about 2,900 times a month, mostly by people who know the name from the laundry aisle and assume the carpet bottle comes from the same place. It doesn’t. The carpet line is a Bissell product line wearing a licensed name. That is the same brand-without-a-machine pattern as Resolve, OxiClean, and Zep, with one twist: the company that makes Woolite’s carpet formulas also makes the machines you would pour them into. This guide maps the 2026 Woolite carpet lineup, prices it from the shelf, sets out what independent lab data exists, and tells you which bottle is worth buying.
Woolite carpet cleaner, by the numbers
- $62 million — what Bissell paid Playtex for the Woolite rug and upholstery business in 2004, per The New York Times (September 28, 2004). Bissell has made Woolite carpet products under a trademark license since.
- 3rd vs. 12th of 13 — where a Woolite INSTAclean spray (average 2.21) and Woolite Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam (average 2.72) placed in TURI’s July 15, 2019 carpet-stain trial, on a scale where 1 means no stain and 5 means severe.
- 3 — the number of Woolite carpet products Target sold online on November 4, 2026: the 12 oz foam ($4.99), INSTAclean Pet ($5.99), and Pet + Oxy 2X machine formula ($16.99).
- 42 cents vs. 25 cents an ounce — Woolite’s 12 oz Carpet and Upholstery Foam ($4.99) versus Resolve High Traffic Foam (22 oz, $5.49) at Target. Per-ounce figures are our math.
- pH 5 — the pH of Woolite Pet + Oxy 2X, according to AskBISSELL’s answer on Target’s product page. That is on the mildly acidic side, which is the side wool tolerates better than alkaline cleaners.
Who actually makes Woolite carpet cleaner
Woolite was introduced in 1951 as a laundry detergent brand. Its carpet business took a separate path. In 2004, Playtex sold the Woolite rug and upholstery business to Bissell for $62 million, as reported by The New York Times, and Bissell has manufactured Woolite carpet products under a license from the trademark owner ever since. You can see the arrangement in three places today. Target’s Woolite carpet listings print “Woolite® is a trademark of Reckitt Benckiser used under license.” The questions on those listings are answered by AskBISSELL, Bissell’s customer-service account. And the old woolitecarpet.com address now forwards straight to the Woolite category on Bissell’s own website.
The trademark side changed hands in 2025. On July 18, 2025, Reckitt announced the sale of its Essential Home business to Advent International at an enterprise value of up to $4.8 billion, keeping a 30% stake. Reckitt named Woolite among Essential Home’s global brands, alongside Air Wick, Calgon, Resolve, Cillit Bang, Sole, and Easy-Off. That business now operates as Vestacy, which says brand rights vary by market.
For a shopper, two practical points follow. First, Woolite carpet formulas are Bissell formulas, so a Woolite bottle and a Bissell-branded bottle on the same shelf come from the same maker. Second, the license line on the label may lag behind the ownership change, so a can that still says Reckitt is not a sign of old or counterfeit stock.
The 2026 Woolite carpet lineup, priced
| Product | Type | Size | Price (Nov 4, 2026) | Per oz | Label fact worth knowing |

| Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover | Trigger spray, contains hydrogen peroxide | 22 fl oz | $5.99 (Target); $15.10 from a marketplace seller on Walmart.com | 27¢ at Target | "Starts working on contact"; Bissell says safe on colorfast carpets, including wool |

Target prices were checked on Target’s website and Walmart prices on Walmart.com, both on November 4, 2026. Target had only the first three products in stock online. The other three appeared on Walmart.com at prices well above what comparable sprays and foams cost, and at least one Woolite listing there (INSTAclean Pet) was sold and shipped by a third-party marketplace seller rather than Walmart. Bissell’s own website blocked our price checks, so we can’t quote its direct prices.
The short version: the Woolite products sold at normal prices in 2026 are the three Target carries. The rest of the lineup exists, but you will mostly find it through marketplace sellers at a markup.
What independent tests found
Woolite’s marketing promises things like “permanently removes tough set-in stains.” Independent comparisons are rare, but one public lab trial put two Woolite products side by side with 11 competitors.
Toxics Use Reduction Institute (July 15, 2019). TURI’s Cleaner Solutions lab at UMass Lowell stained almond-white cut-pile carpet with 10 agents (mustard, ketchup, hot coffee, grape juice, black permanent marker, dirty motor oil, synthetic soil, chocolate syrup, cat urine, and simulated dog vomit), let them age overnight, then applied each cleaner, left it on for 2 minutes, and blotted. Each product got up to three applications. At least three lab staff rated each stain 24 hours later on a 1-to-5 scale, where 1 means no stain and 5 means severe, so lower is better.
| Rank | Product (as named by TURI) | Overall average (lower is better) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | OxiClean Carpet & Area Rug | 2.14 |
| 2 | Shout Pets Pro Strength Stain and Odor Remover | 2.20 |
| 3 | Woolite Insta Clean | 2.21 |
| 4 | Resolve Spot and Stain | 2.27 |
| 5 | Urine Gone | 2.31 |
| 6 | Febreze Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam | 2.34 |
| 7 | Resolve Carpet Foam | 2.38 |
| 8 | Shout Pets: Enzymatic Stain and Odor Remover | 2.44 |
| 9 | Resolve Urine Destroyer | 2.46 |
| 10 | Clorox Urine Remover | 2.48 |
| 11 | Shout Carpet | 2.58 |
| 12 | Woolite Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam | 2.72 |
| 13 | Shout Carpet Urine Destroyer | 2.73 |
The overall averages are TURI’s; the ranking is our ordering of them. The two Woolite products sit at opposite ends:
- Woolite INSTAclean was the best of all 13 products on simulated dog vomit (1.67) and the second best on black permanent marker (3.00, behind Urine Gone at 2.78).
- Woolite Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam had the worst score of all 13 on black marker (5.00, which means the stain looked as severe as before) and on chocolate syrup (4.67). It also scored 4.56 on mustard. Among the three foams in the trial, it trailed both Febreze Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam (2.34) and Resolve Carpet Foam (2.38).
- Every product, Woolite’s included, scored a perfect 1.00 on hot coffee and on cat urine. That is a visual score only; the trial did not measure odor.
Read this trial with three caveats. It is from 2019, so current formulas may differ. TURI lists the product only as “Woolite Insta Clean,” without saying whether it was the Pet or the Permanent Stain version. And TURI’s own conclusion was that “the thirteen cleaning products were effective and similar in performance overall”: the whole field spans just 2.14 to 2.73. The ranking is useful for telling you which Woolite product is the stronger one, not for proving that any brand is dramatically better than another.
Consumer Reports. CR has rated Woolite Heavy Traffic in its carpet stain remover ratings, but the score is for members only. Woolite is not among the winners CR names in the free summary of its September 2026 carpet stain remover test, which is broken down in our best carpet stain remover guide.
1. Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover — Best Woolite Product Overall
Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover (22 fl oz)
- Label caution: "Contains hydrogen peroxide." That makes it an oxidizer, the same chemistry as Consumer Reports' May 2026 Top Pick for dog urine, OdoBan Pet Oxy. It is not an enzyme cleaner.
- Marketed as starting to work "on contact" and removing stains in 30 seconds, with biodegradable detergents and no heavy metals or dyes.
- Bissell says it is safe on colorfast carpets, including wool, and recommends testing a hidden spot first on hand-knotted wool rugs.
- At $5.99 for 22 fl oz (27 cents an ounce), it costs less per ounce than Resolve Pet Stain Urine Destroyer ($10.49 for 32 fl oz, 33 cents) at Target.
This is the Woolite bottle with evidence behind it. A Woolite INSTAclean spray placed 3rd of 13 in TURI’s 2019 trial and beat every other product on dog vomit, which is exactly the kind of mess a pet household reaches for it to fix. Buy it from Target or another store selling it at shelf price. On November 4, 2026 a third-party seller on Walmart.com wanted $15.10 for the same 22 oz bottle. For a urine spot that has soaked into the pad, spray alone won’t reach it; our best carpet cleaner for dog urine guide covers the extraction step, and our best enzyme carpet cleaner guide explains when an enzyme is the better chemistry.
2. Woolite Carpet & Upholstery Foam Cleaner — Best for Small Upholstery Spots
Woolite Carpet & Upholstery Foam Cleaner (12 oz, model 8352)
- Built-in brush head on the can, so you can work the foam into a cushion or a stair tread without a separate brush.
- Target lists it as bleach-free and phosphate-free. AskBISSELL describes it as "a no solvent cleaner" that uses hydrocarbon gases as the propellant.
- Not recommended on velvet, leather, or silk, per Target's specifications.
- Pricier per ounce (42 cents) than Resolve's 22 oz traffic foam (25 cents), so it is a spot product, not a whole-room product.
The foam is gentle by design. Bissell’s published ingredient list for the related Woolite One Step Foam Carpet Cleaner shows water, isobutane and propane propellants, two mild surfactants (sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and an alkyl polyglycoside), and fragrance. There is no peroxide and no solvent, which makes it a reasonable choice for a fabric couch with a “W” or “W/S” cleaning code. It is also why it is not a heavy stain fighter. For a whole sofa, a small extractor does far more; see our best upholstery cleaner guide.
3. Woolite Pet + Oxy Formula 2X — Best Woolite Machine Formula
Woolite Pet + Oxy Formula 2X (60 oz)
- Listed as working "with all deep cleaning machines" and 2 times concentrated. Target's description calls it Woolite Oxy Deep Steam Pet Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner, so you may see either name.
- pH 5 and no enzymes, according to AskBISSELL's answers on Target's product page.
- $16.99 for 60 oz is less than the $18.99 Target charged for Bissell's own 2X formula in the same size on October 31, 2026.
- Label warning: eye irritant; flush immediately if it gets into eyes.
This is the quiet value pick in the lineup. Because Bissell makes it, it is designed for the same extraction machines as Bissell’s own formulas, and at Target it currently costs less than Bissell-branded 2X. Resolve’s machine formula, by comparison, was only available from a third-party seller at $44.95 for 60 oz when we checked on October 31. Bissell also sells a smaller 32 oz Woolite INSTAclean Pet Machine Formula for its TurboClean and ProHeat 2X Revolution uprights. Our best carpet cleaner solution guide compares the machine formulas worth buying across brands.
Skip: Woolite Heavy Traffic Foam at marketplace prices
Woolite Heavy Traffic Foam is built for the same job as Resolve High Traffic Foam: spray a whole traffic lane, work it in, let it dry, and vacuum. Bissell says a 22 oz can covers high-traffic areas up to about 170 square feet. The problem is evidence and price. It ranked 12th of 13 in TURI’s 2019 trial, behind both competing foams, and on November 4, 2026 Walmart.com listed it at $14.23, while Resolve High Traffic Foam was $5.74 and Febreze Gain Heavy Traffic foam $6.94 on the same site. Unless you find it at a normal shelf price, there is no reason to pay that premium. Our best carpet cleaner for high-traffic areas guide covers what to do when a gray lane keeps coming back.
Skip on wool: Woolite Advanced Pet Stain & Odor Remover + Sanitize
This is the product that breaks the assumption behind the brand name. Its Walmart.com listing says it “kills 99.9% of bacteria on carpet and soft surfaces,” specifically Enterobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, and then adds in the fine print: “Not for use on polypropylene/olefin or wool fibers.” A Woolite carpet product you can’t use on wool is a good reminder that the name describes a brand, not a fiber rating. It was also $21.65 for 22 oz on Walmart.com, nearly a dollar an ounce. If your goal is pet odor rather than disinfection, INSTAclean Pet does the stain work for a quarter of the price.
Woolite vs. the alternatives on the same shelf
| Product | Job | Independent evidence | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover | Pet accidents, spot stains | Woolite Insta Clean 3rd of 13 (TURI 2019); best on dog vomit | $5.99 / 22 fl oz (Target) |
| OdoBan Pet Solutions Oxy Stain Remover | Pet urine | OdoBan Pet Oxy was CR's May 2026 Top Pick on real dog urine | $5.23 / 32 oz (Walmart.com) |
| Resolve Pet Stain Urine Destroyer | Pet urine | 9th of 13 (TURI 2019) | $10.49 / 32 fl oz (Target, Oct 31) |
| Woolite Heavy Traffic Foam | Traffic lanes | 12th of 13 (TURI 2019) | $14.23 / 22 oz (Walmart.com) |
| Resolve High Traffic Foam | Traffic lanes | Resolve Carpet Foam 7th of 13 (TURI 2019) | $5.74 / 22 oz (Walmart.com) |
| Bissell Febreze Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam | Traffic lanes, oil | 6th of 13 (TURI 2019); CR 2026 #2 overall | $7.24 / 22 oz (Bissell.com, Oct 29) |
| Woolite Pet + Oxy Formula 2X | Machine tank | No public test found | $16.99 / 60 oz (Target) |
| Bissell 2X machine formula | Machine tank | No public test found | $18.99 / 60 oz (Target, Oct 31) |
Woolite and Walmart.com prices are from November 4, 2026. Resolve and Bissell prices marked with an earlier date are from our checks for the Resolve carpet cleaner and best carpet stain remover guides. The TURI ranks come from the July 2019 trial above; Resolve High Traffic Foam is matched to the product TURI calls “Resolve Carpet Foam,” and Febreze Heavy Traffic Carpet Foam is the Bissell-made Febreze foam.
How to use Woolite carpet cleaner without making it worse
- Blot first. Lift as much of a fresh spill as you can with a white towel and cool water. In TURI’s 2019 trial, hot coffee came out completely with all 13 products and grape juice nearly so with most of them, which tells you prompt blotting and any decent cleaner handle fresh drinks.
- Test a hidden spot. This matters most for the peroxide products (INSTAclean Pet, Pet + Oxy), which can lighten some dyes. Let the test spot dry before you judge it.
- Read the fiber line on the specific bottle. Bissell rates INSTAclean Pet as safe on colorfast wool, but the Advanced Pet + Sanitize spray says not for wool or olefin. Our best carpet cleaner for wool carpet guide covers the heat and moisture side of wool care.
- Keep sprays and foams out of machines. Only the Woolite machine formula belongs in a tank. Aerosol foams and trigger sprays over-foam and can leave residue.
- Don’t oversaturate. Soaking the backing pushes a stain into the pad, where it wicks back up as the carpet dries. If a spot keeps coming back, our how to remove old carpet stains guide covers wicking.
- Never mix cleaners. Don’t combine a peroxide spray with bleach or other household cleaners, and keep kids and pets off treated carpet until it is dry.
The bottom line
Woolite carpet cleaner is a Bissell product line under a licensed name, and its quality depends entirely on which bottle you pick. Buy Woolite INSTAclean Pet Stain Remover ($5.99 at Target) for pet accidents and everyday spots: a Woolite INSTAclean spray placed 3rd of 13 in TURI’s 2019 lab trial and was the best of all 13 on dog vomit. Pick up Woolite Pet + Oxy 2X ($16.99 for 60 oz) if you own a deep cleaner, since it currently costs less at Target than Bissell’s own 2X formula. Use the 12 oz Carpet & Upholstery Foam for small upholstery spots. Skip Woolite Heavy Traffic Foam at marketplace prices: it ranked 12th of 13 and costs more than twice as much as Resolve’s foam. And don’t assume the name means wool-safe. For tougher stains, start with our best carpet stain remover picks. For ground-in soil across a whole room, no spray replaces an extractor, so see our best carpet cleaner guide.
